Futsal originated in South America in the 1930s and 1940s as a variation of association football (soccer). The game was played on a smaller pitch, usually indoors, and with a smaller, heavier ball. The word "futsal" is derived from the Spanish words "futbol sala", which mean "indoor football".
The first recorded futsal game was played in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930, and the game quickly gained popularity in South America, particularly in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Futsal was initially played on basketball courts, but later evolved to be played on surfaces specifically designed for the sport.
In the 1980s, futsal began to gain international recognition, and in 1989, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) officially recognised futsal as a form of indoor soccer. Today, futsal is played in over 100 countries, and there are international competitions such as the FIFA Futsal World Cup and the UEFA Futsal Championship.!
